Finally, I managed to wrangle myself a pin for shooting ten chickens in a row. I shot a 35 out of 40 overall for that set. I came very close to getting a pin for rams, but by the time I was on the tenth ram, my pulse rate was so high I could see my heart beat moving the rifle, and I missed. Damn! But hey, I’ll take my chicken pin. Turns out I don’t do well when I don’t eat before going to the match. I do better when I eat first. I’ll have to remember that.

Congratulations! Sounds like you had a lot of fun. :)
What was the event and where was the competition held? What rifle did you use? I’m in Pennsylvania a lot; can I come shoot too?
I’m pretty sure that you’re in lower Bucks county. What range do you shoot at? At my club (Bucks County Fish and Game), the only rifle/pistol targets are paper, and shooting at paper only can get old quickly. Plus, we have the stupid no rapid fire rule, even on the 7 yard pistol range.
Congrats on the pin.
One other factor you might want to toy with is the amount of caffeine in your system.
Wow! Congrats!
Variable and Wai:
I shoot at Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Club. We’re a private club, but our Indoor Silhouette match is open to the public. It’s 3 dollars for non members per match. It’s not a sanctioned event, just for bragging rights. Basically 25 yards, indoor, offhand shooting at small metallic silhouettes (about the size of a 3×5 card, if you cut it into an animal shape) with a .22LR pistol or rifle, scoped or open sights. I’m shooting a stock Ruger 10/22 with a cheap BSA scope. Nothing fancy. At some point I’ll probably get myself a better rifle, but right now my scores are limited more by my skill than by the rifle.
Good shooters do anywhere from 36 out of 40 animals to 40 out of 40. 36-40 would put you in the top ranks. 30-36, you’re an OK shooter. I have typically gotten in the high 20s, but I think this might have been my breakout into the 30s. I tend to shoot like shit for a long time, then I figure something out that suddenly improves my shooting. I’m hoping last night wasn’t just an anomaly, but we shall see.
Good job, dude!
Are you given a time limit for your course of fire, or is it like international style .22 slow fire, where you take as long as you want?
It’s timed, but it’s like 2 1/2 minutes for 5 targets, or something like that. I always finish before time runs out. I shoot too quickly, actually. It’s one of my problems.
