Senator Ted Stevens Indicted

Looks like Senator Stevens has been indicted in a corruption probe.  If the Republicans lose, and lose big this November, they will have only themselves to blame.  That’s not to say the Democrats are any better, given money in freezers, and a presidential candidate that hails from the city that put the “C” in Corruption.  But it makes me wonder:

The indictment released Tuesday said the items included: home improvements to his vacation him in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as car exchanges, a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools.

I’m in the wrong line of work.  I just need a new patio roof and patio.  If that is Senatorial level graft and corruption, I figure a nice state level position would be enough to weasel a new patio out of someone.

  1. I’m always amazed that they’re so cheap.

I could understand getting bought for a few million.

But a few thousand? Or even a hundred thousand?

    WTF?

  2. a few thousand here, a few thousand there, and after a few dozen like that you’ve got the bill you racked up campaigning for that senatorial seat paid back already… those run in the five figures these days, unless i’m behind my times and they’ve gone into six figures already. so, yeah, us mere mortals who can’t pay for all of our home improvement projects out of pocket can pretty much forget ever seeing any slices of that pie.

  3. Nomen,

No offense, but I think you’re way behind the times.

For example, in 2004, candidates for the House of Representatives who raised less than $1 million had almost no chance of winning, he said, while the average successful Senate campaign cost $7 million.

  4. ouch. these regular cynicism boosters just keep getting more painful every time i get one.
