Allegheny County, which is home to Pittsburgh, issues more licenses to carry than any other county in the state:
About one in 20 people in Allegheny County has a permit to carry a concealed firearm, state police records show. With 60,000 licensed gun owners, the county has more than any county in the state. Statewide, more than 800,000 people can carry a concealed weapon.
That figure for the whole state is a lot higher than previously reported. Could be wrong, or it could be we’ve had an increase in the number of people seeking licenses.
There’s an annual police report that tells how many people got licenses over the last year. Theoretically, by adding up the numbers over five years (the duration of the license), you can get the total number of people with licenses (treating as negligible any revocations or early renewals). I did the calculation last year and got a total of about a million; I’ll have to see if I can find the reports again.
That doesn’t surprise me. Pittsburgh ain’t Philadelphia.
Can’t possibly be correct. All those guns and I didn’t see any blood running in the streets on my recent visit.
