Local Self-Defense Incident

This is one town over from me:

A would-be bandit apparently never heard the idiom “never bring a knife to a gunfight.”

According to police, a man hoping to rob a pharmacy in Bristol Township, Pa., on Wednesday night pulled a knife, struggled with a clerk and was shot by a second clerk.

[…]

The suspect was taken to the hospital by the Levittown-Fairless Hills Rescue Squad. The clerks weren’t injured, and police said the clerk who owns the firearm has a license to carry it.

The robber will be facing charges when he recovers.   This has even gotten coverage in New Jersey.  I don’t see that the clerk had any other choice.  Once you start grappling with someone who has a knife, you’re more likely than not going to get cut.

  1. Cam Edwards mentioned this incident last night on his NRA show for his “armed citizen” segment. At first, he said that this story took place in New Jersey, but I think he made that mistake only because he was reading about it from a New Jersey media outlet’s web site.

I was surprised when Cam mentioned the carry license part of the story, as he seemed to be too, because I still have yet to ever hear of any New Jersey retail store employee who is also a total civilian and legally packing a firearm on the job. I’ll try to see if there are any flying pigs up in the sky on the day that happens.

Anyway, Cam corrected his error regarding the story’s location a bit later on after somebody sent him a talkback message about it, which is a good thing, because we surely can’t have anybody outside of New Jersey getting the wrong idea about us Jersey people actually having the same rights as they do or anything like that, right?

  2. The one thing my old tae kwon do instructor beat into us was to never get into a knife fight, primarily because the first thing you have to understand about them is that you are going to get cut. The trick is just being the one deciding where, and then choosing carefully.

As for this instance, it certainly seems justified, and perhaps the perp will reconsider in the future. We can only hope.

  3. Same for me as Linoge……old martial arts instructor always said if the other guy has a knife, you have a 100% chance of getting cut, and a 50% chance of getting dead, even with training
