It’s a decent guess. And good news for Second Amendment supporters if true.
Chief Justice Roberts is a canny guy who plays his cards close to his vest. However, my read of him, from his questions in the Heller and McDonald oral arguments, and from his dissent in U.S. v. Hayes (2009) (where he urged a narrow interpretation of 922(g)(9), the misdemeanor DV gun ban), is that he is a genuine supporter of gun rights — one of the three best Justices on this issue.
Alito is not a bad Justice, but the “former prosecutor” thing runs deep in him. Kennedy? Who knows?
