The thing about Obama’s press release that really bothered me was that he referred to the opposition of the NRA as “gun safety” advocates, when in fact that NRA has done a million times more for gun safety than the VPC or Brady Campaign could ever hope to do. I would have called him out directly on that, instead of just emphasizing that the NRA “promot[es] safe and responsible gun ownership”.
I’m not quite sure how prosecuting 10 bad guys a month will put 12,000 bad guys behind bars in a year. Even with a 100% conviction rate that’d be 120 criminals behind bars, which is off by a few orders of magnitude. Even 10 cases per week wouldn’t be enough.
Ah, wait — it suggests having each US attorney bring 10 cases…
93 US attorneys x 10 cases x 12 months = ~12K
For FY 2008, it looks like…
– 91,835 defendants in criminal cases commenced in federal court.
– 82,823 offenders were convicted in federal court.
So NRA would basically be asking the US DA’s to shift approximately 15% of their caseload to firearms violations. That’s a pretty hefty policy shift, but perhaps not unreasonable given the issues with repeat offenders. I’m

This seems to be a well thought out and strong letter from the NRA. Could they somehow push/pay to get this published in some major publications/newspapers so the general public (not just us 2ndA supporters) get the jist of what Obama is saying and on the other side what exactly he is doing (or not doing)?
All the NRA really had to say was, “Nuts!”. Obama would have gotten the message, and he would have been just as unhappy about it as a certain German commander was.
Still, the NRA’s message said pretty much the same thing and that’s a good thing. :)
It is a good letter.
