Clayton points to an article in the Washington Times that suggests the Obama Administration was walking guns to the jihadists. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Of course, I thought the same thing about walking guns to Mexico, and that turned out to be actually happening.

Errr, why would this be so unbelievable? We’ve supplied weapons to many many groups before, this is a historical patterns that goes back centuries or probably millennia (e.g. a reason why for a while we could get cheap dimensionally correct forged M14 receivers from the PRC (along with the rest of the gun which wasn’t worth much; we sold/gave our M14 tooling to the ROC)). The only thing really bad would be if they’re preferentially supporting jihadists … and would you really be surprised if Obama and his people were doing that???
Hmm, if true, does not arming our enemies constitute treason; a crime punishable by impeachment and possibly by death?
That would be a first for this country.
But that gets complicated. As the Arab and Chinese proverb goes, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”. And the lethal ophthalmologist Bashar al Assad is no friend of ours.
This was a big issue in arming the Afghan Mujahideen against the Godless Communists; even with the long term bad results of that (e.g. 9/11) many if not most agree it was worth it as an integral part of destroying the Soviet Union short of another world war.
In this case, who knows? Confined to Syria, short of direct intervention we’d prefer both of those sides to kill each other off (pity about the collateral damage, though…). But it’s not confined to the country and that makes these sorts of decisions beyond what I’m willing to guess at without serious study.
