As much as I might be a proponent of transparency in Government, I have no sympathy here:
A coalition of gun violence prevention groups in Virginia (Protest Easy Guns, the Virginia Center for Public Safety, the Virginia Chapters of the Million Mom March, and the Angel Fund) strongly condemns the decision of the House Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee to hold a surprise subcommittee meeting last night to pass HB 49, a bill that would repeal Virginia’s one-handgun-per-month law.
Late last week, the subcommittee, chaired by Del. Thomas C. Wright, had announced that it would conduct no further meetings, leaving HB 49 unreported.  Yesterday, late in the day, the subcommittee inexplicably reconvened with less than a few hours notice to the public to approve this single piece of legislation.
You did this to us for decades, and now paybacks are hell. They raise the specter of Virginia Tech, but fail to mention that the killer there bought two guns in compliance with the rationing law.
The Hughes amendment comes immediately to mind …
The nerve of them…
To get pissed off…
When the very same method they invented…
Gets used against them!
Now to sneak in a Hughes repeal…
Sneak a Hughes repeal or even a GCA or ‘gasp’ NFA repeal onto any health care reform bill.
I think Hughes was meant to be a poison pill. In order to repeal it, you need to have the votes there to do it, which we don’t. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a voice vote at midnight, or otherwise.
Too bad, so sad.
Of course Hughes was meant to be a poison pill. And it failed its intended purpose…
A repeal of it can be used the same way. Or just drop the language into something that’s incredibly likely to pass, preferably something that isn’t going to be gone through with a fine tooth comb.
Just need to find someone with enough balls to do what needs to be done.
It’ll never happen if nobody attempts it…
Regardless, I’m loving the irony here.
You need to find a majority of one of the houses to do what needs to be done. What happened with hughes still takes a congressional majority. That means it’s not one guy with balls, it’s 218 house members or 51 senators (really 60 for most things).
This is the same game they continue to play in Illinois. Ask the NRA lobbyist how often he has to scramble when they change rooms/times w/ practically no notice.
Last year they killed the AWB minutes before the IGOLD march got there then fled out the back doors.
Sorry. I meant CCW, not AWB.
I second the “sneak Hughes repeal onto healthcare reform bill” movement.
