  2. I prefer the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit (their smaller model), but I would not be opposed to carrying a Leatherman (despite the owner’s personal opinions) or an SOG. Not a fan of Gerber’s though.

  3. I have a “Schrade Tough” multitool in its own pouch on my belt as I type this. This one has a black anodized finish. I got it off Ebay for less than twenty-five bucks and so far, it has held up quite well for me. I had another Schrade with a brushed satin finish that I bought at Kmart about ten years ago, but I lost that one somehow. That one also worked out rather well for me.

  4. I like my Leatherman Juice. However, Gerber’s advertising is so wonderful and politically incorrect that I can’t help but being a fan. They make decent blades too.

  5. Over time I am inclined to focus on obtaining quality products and caring little about unrelated political persuasions of the provider. Life is too short to get wound up protesting the tangential free choices of people I don’t know. The guy makes the multi tool you want? Buy it.

  11. Yeah, this is a dilemma.

    I would prefer to support a non-hippie company, like Gerber, but I really dislike Gerber multitools. Clunky and inefficient designs. Whereas Leathermans are great. Love mine. Darn it.

    Maybe I should look into SOG.

  12. I’ve had several mult-tools. Gerber makes decent ones, in some ways better than leatherman, whose blades don’t stay very sharp. right now at work, I use an Ozark Trail multi-tool- cheap, from Wally world. Works fine, has lasted fairly well.

  13. I carry a mid-sized Swiss army knife and 6″ vice-grip pliers. Same weight, less cost, suits my needs.

    As for Gerber, back in the USMC I was in a unit where three of our four “gerbers” had tool “bits” break off. We actually had one guy buy another unit to use as spare parts.

  14. Get a Gerber Diesel and never look back. I used to beat on my Gerber at my old job and they last forever. Just try to get ones with the beefy pliers tips instead of the needle-nose if you can.

  17. I 2nd the the Swiss Army Victornoix Multi Tool. I’ve have several for at least 5 years. I prefer the larger version, warning it is heavy. But the tools actually work and last.

    I have had 1 gerber that was excellent.

    I dislike leathermans. I have had several, forget politics, for me they do not hold up well at all compared to the MultiTool or the Gerber I had. (Lost it :( )

  18. I’ve got a Leatherman 2000 that I’ve been using for about 10 years now. It has traveled all over the world with me and done everything I needed to do with it. What especially useful is that you can get an adapter for it that let’s you use 1/4″ hex-driver bits with it.

  23. I got a SOG to replace my Wave. Main difference: SOG flicks open easily to access pliers. Wave had blade that could be opened easily with one hand.

    Do you want a pair of pliers with a knife inside, or a knife with a pair of pliers inside?

    I like the SOG a lot.

  25. Didn’t I read that most of the Buck and Gerber knives are now made in China? Aren’t Leatherman’s made in the US?

    If so, you are supporting left wing causes no matter what you buy!
