Looks like NRA is really trying to drive the point home on Supreme Court nominees, with Chris Cox writing in the Daily Caller:
Currently, the Second Amendment clings to a 5-4 pro-freedom majority on the Supreme Court. Just one vote is all that stands between the America our Founding Fathers established and a radically different America that Barack Obama and his supporters envision.
This is probably the biggest issue for us in the 2012 elections. If we lose one of the Heller Five, and Obama gets to pick his replacement, all the Alan Guras in the world won’t be able to save the Second Amendment. Even if Heller and McDonald never get formally overturned, we’ve seen from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that intermediate scrutiny can easily be used to conclude that banning commonly used entire categories of firearms is just fine. The same logic could be used to erase the “bear” part of “keep and bear” just as easily.
Which is why I’m so concerned that Romney might get the nod and leave us with no options.
Romney is unreliable on this issue. Bitter has experience dealing with Romney from her time up in Mass. He is not to be trusted.
I don’t understand the fear and fervor about Obama being so vehemently anti 2A when he’s already signed pro-gun legislation. He’s had opportunity to veto and hasn’t. I don’t think it’s as dire as Not Relevant Anymore would have us believe.
Robert,
Some was attached to “must-pass” legislation he liked, some passed with veto-override numbers. He wants to be re-elected and so has been on his best behavior, that won’t be the case in a second term.
By his previous statements and stated policy goals, which he has never renounced, he is an active enemy of gun rights. The fact he’s been restrained by circumstance doesn’t change that.
If we pass a squeaker bill, not attached to something he wants, that will be the test.
Still, the key is SC nominees, Sotomayor is bad, Kagan may be. If he gets a second term and doesn’t have to worry about re-election he is unlikely to nominate someone “pro-gun rights” and all it’s takes is a Justice who is a little anti to, as pointed out, make Heller/McDonald and whatever goes up this session toothless in the future.
What? Romney is unreliable on gun rights?!? And to think, I voted for the guy! (Admittedly, I voted for him after Thompson dropped out, and it was him or McCain…but, still!)
Yeah, I’ve never trusted Romney; thus, I can’t exactly say it breaks my heart to see him plateauing in terms of support.
I still don’t understand how Romney has an (R) after his name in the first place.
When I first read the title I took it as “prepare for the 2012 apocalypse”. I just finished reading Rawles’ Survivors, so bear with me
My own glimpses into how the GOP works leave me with a persistent and very disquieting feeling that Romney is it.
On guns, Romney vs. Obama II is a choice between getting knifed in the chest and shivved in the back. Not much of a choice. I wouldn’t even trust Roms to nominate good judges; he’s GHW Bush, now with added Mormonism.
“he’s GHW Bush, now with added Mormonism.”
But not much of it, or he would be a reliable social conservative, and he is emphatically not.
@Heather: He’s from MA and his ties don’t feature the hammer and sickle, that’s why he has an R after his name
