If microstamping were to become law, firearms manufacturers would be forced to employ a patented, sole-sourced concept that independent studies, including those from the National Academy of Sciences and the University of California at Davis, found to be flawed and easily defeated by criminals. Passage of this bill could result in layoffs of factory workers throughout New York as manufacturers, already being heavily lobbied by tax and gun friendly states, consider moving out of New York. Furthermore, firearms manufacturers could be forced to abandon the New York market altogether rather than spend the astronomical sums of money needed to completely reconfigure their manufacturing and assembly processes. This would directly impact law enforcement, firearms retailers and their law-abiding customers.
What we would call a bug, the supporters of this bill would call a feature. If you don’t think New York City politicians would sacrifice upstate jobs on the altar of their hatred for the Second Amendment, you’re kidding yourself.
More firearm makers need to pull a Ronnie Barrett and refuse to sell firearms to hostile state/municipal agencies and no long offer warranty service to them.
This isn’t exactly right. A handful of legislators would like the Governor to include microstamping in one of his budget bills. The legislature isn’t allowed to modify budget bills, only adjust the spending in them. The Governor, on the other hand, I don’t believe has the authority to include such items in a budget. The antis are getting desperate because microstamping has been getting progressively more unpopular in the legislature and they’re having difficulties bringing their bill to the Assembly floor.
It’s nice the NSSF took notice of this though, only a week after I sent out the first alert. You can tell their $5000+/month lobbyists are really on the ball …
I agree with David. It would be awesome if manufacturers would just cut off these sorts of municipalities.
Of course, New York is so large that they could probably open their own armory and Bloomberg could supply all the member municipalities of MAIG to meet their needs. Of course, sidearms made in such a factory would have 69 lb triggers, four integral locks, microstamps, RFID chips, biometric fingerprint scanners, and magnets to detect evil lead ammunition, and they’d cost $12,345 dollars each but hey, its for the kids, right?
It is amazing what a small campaign contribution and some earnest discussions with legislative staff can do for the manufacturer of a novel product. The only question here is what exactly was paid for, getting the words inserted, or getting the words passed into law? Because I hope and suspect the manufacturer is smart enough not to pay, errr, donate in full up front.
