The NRA Statement

This was just posted to the re-published Facebook page:

The NRA is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.

Amen to that.

UPDATE: And, a very bold announcement about a press conference on Friday.

  2. A press conference?!?!?!!! That in itself is bold.

    Probably necessary when they’re being blood libeled, getting death threats, etc.

    We’ll see; this is their chance to get me to return sooner than ten years after they tried to pass their and McCarthy’s Veteran’s Disarmament Act after VT (my rule is that if they can go ten years without trying to pass another gun control bill I’ll return; in one way I’m in no hurry, they’ll put more money in Ackerman-McQueen’s pockets sending me junk mail than I can afford to give them. That’s why I didn’t renew my SAF membership, at net it cost them money).

  3. very curious what this press conference is about? Why make such a big deal about it? The only thing that makes any sense to me is if they come out swinging, otherwise I really don’t understand the hype? Not sure what their best play is at this point, think it’s probably a little too soon for them to be trying to do public image damage control, but I know essentially nothing about this kind of thing. Hope they do!

    This is what scares me and what I was afraid of.

    After a long, reflective silence (which is probably indicative of some very lengthy and animated internal discussions about what to do next), the NRA comes out offering “meaningful contributions”.

    Like the meaningful contributions they provided in 1934?

    How about the meaningful contributions they provided in 1968?

    Or the meaningful contributions in 1986?

    Let’s just say that the NRA’s track record of “meaningful contributions” does not engender a whole lot of confidence in me.

    They appear to have gone into full-blown damage control mode.

    And…of course…just like after their previous “meaningful contributions” it will all be about how they had to “compromise” by supporting some gun control to prevent even worse things from passing.

    Perhaps I’m misreading things.

    I HOPE I’m misreading things.

    PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me be misreading things.

    But I’m not holding my breath.
