Wednesday News Links

I’ve been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest, and Scandalpalooza is still all in the news, but there’s still at least some stories to be linked.

Katee Sackhoff of “Battlestar Galactica” fame says she lost half her Twitter followers because of a comment about gun safety. Thirdpower has more.

We’re going to have a ballot fight on our hands in Washington State. Ballot fights are bad news, especially because we’re up against someone who has the money to fight them. That’s why I’m skeptical of Gary Johnson’s move to try to repeal Colorado’s gun law through the ballot. If this fails, you’ll never get rid of it.

Speaking of Colorado, it seems Hickenlooper is, in fact, Bloomberg’s puppet.

Is Mayor Bloomber’s MAIG anti-gun? Well, at least now he’s admitting it.

Biden is bidding to restart the gun control push. Well, I guess the White House figures it’s a good distraction from Scandalpalooza.

Bloomberg is targeting donors to pro-gun Democrats, and trying to get them to stop donating. Bloomberg is figuring that if he can’t drive Republicans in the gun debate, he can at least kill any pro-gun sentiment in the Democratic Party. If he’s successful in that, it’ll only be a matter of time, since there won’t be one party in power forever.

Maine almost voted for Constitutional Carry in the House.

The Bad Gun Dumpster.

A disabled shooter finally gets to shoot for the first time in 11 years. Comments on reddit seem mostly positive. The company that makes those rigs is here.

More anti-gun grassroots. I’ve seen more people than that at my club meetings.

Also, see this post on credibility in the blog world. More from SayUncle on the subject.

  1. Sackhoff’s show Longmire is decent, but has the same problem a lot of cop shows outside NYC or LA have, they assume the laws are the same. The other night the Sheriff noticed someone’s pistol and that persons reflexive response was “it’s registered”.

    To who? It’s Wyoming!

    1. I thought the same thing.

One of the reasons I quit watching the walking dead is they suddenly seemed to get a little leery about guns. One episode had teh sheriff bragging about knowing where guns might be hidden because he’d “registered” them himself. He registered guns? In Georgia? I think not.

      1. I thought he said “signed the permits myself”, which I thought meant CCW. But it should require that much thinking to find houses with guns in Georgia. Try one, and if it whiffs, try the neighbor’s house.

        1. Which is why I can’t watch it. Have trouble finding guns in Georgia? Totally implausible.

  2. I have to wonder if Katie Sackhoff is doing a little PR stunt to get some attention for Longmire from the generally conservative viewers whom it would most appeal to. Because if she truly lost 100,000 people/50% of her fan base because of an innocuous statement about gun safety … we on the pro gun side are truly in trouble. It’s not like Battlestar Galactica, or claim to fame, was some kind of a progressive utopian fantasy show.

Not done a lot of work on this, but AFAIK it’s only her claim that she lost 100k followers. Is there any way to verify? (don’t even know personally)

  3. Thing is, she’s right, in the general sense. From gun proofing the kid to the 4 rules to better storage when unexpected company arrives, that was preventable.

And from the article, there’s no indication (and I’m thinking it’d be guesswork anyway) where the bulk of the lost followers lie. The anti-gun, taking offense that she urged safety instead of a ban?

    1. It didn’t occur to me, because the spin has been that she lost followers because she wasn’t promoting a gun ban, but the bulk of her losses may have been from pro-gun people. In fact, I’d be willing to bet on it, though I wasn’t offended personally. Here is the media spin though:

Soon after, Sackhoff’s Twitter feed blew up with followers advocating gun control instead of gun safety.

“Here’s a radical idea folks. How about NO gun?” one wrote.

Sackhoff responded to her critics: “Never gonna happen in the US. Proper gun safety is a necessity though.”

That did not satisfy many, who continued to criticize her initial comment.

Sackhoff tried to elaborate on her position: “Just to be clear…I NEVER said automatic guns should be legal!“

But it was too late. While many came to her defense (“I don’t understand why @kateesackhoff got so much flack for a gun safety tweet. She’s right”), her initial comment apparently cost her about 100,000 Twitter followers.

  4. Good old fox news. She had 100,000 twitter followers, gained about 3000 over the course of the day, then made a joke about losing half of them. Fox took it literally and reported that she’d had 200,000 the day before. Idiots.

Reason finally came out with the truth: http://twittercounter.com/kateesackhoff

    1. Haha, just checked the page again, and she’s now gained twenty-seven thousand followers, in the last few days.
If it was a ploy to promote Longmire, it worked!

      1. Didn’t know there was a twitter counter. But yup … all a game. Looking at the last few months she lost almost none — she’s been on a constant increase. *whew* so nope — no anti-gun grassroots support there.
