Las Vegas is the world capital of tacky weddings. You can get married by Elvis and have a shrimp buffet afterwards! So it’s no surprise that someone set up a range to sell “shotgun weddings.” It’s all in good fun. But of course, the killjoys over at CSGV and the Brady Campaign are having none of it:
“Responsible gun owners appreciate the risks of having a gun,” says Jonathan Hutson spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “They don’t treat a gun casually like a party favor.”
As long as they are following the four rules, I don’t really see what the problem is. Sure, even as a gunny, this wouldn’t really be my cup of tea, but did I mention this was Las Vegas?
To love guns enough to include them in your wedding vows is a problem with our culture, according to Ladd Everitt, the communications director for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence in Washington, DC. “We live in a society where a certain subset of gun owners fetishize firearms, talking them as something akin to religious idols,” he said. “There is a strong spiritual element here, where commonly embraced maxims of faith, ‘Thou shalt not kill,’ ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before me,’ are rejected outright. The gun culture takes great pride in ignoring the risks posed by firearms, and embraces the suffering they cause: ‘That’s the price of liberty.’ Some might describe this philosophy as nihilism.”
I’ll bet Ladd is a load of fun at parties. I’d have left it at “Well, it seems kind of tacky to us,” but I’m not the type of person who wakes up at one in the morning in a cold sweat worrying that someone out there might be having fun.
So Ladd Everitt wants to ban religious devotion then? I, for one, don’t see having a “shotgun wedding” to be a “worship of guns”, but even if it were, then who am I to impose my religious belief on others?
And why would having a wedding at a gun range have anything to do with gun violence? I get the impression that for something to qualify as gun violence in the eyes of CSGV, it merely has to happen in the presence of a gun…
They classify a picture of a gun as ‘gun violence’.
I am not a Christian, or a Jew, or a Muslim, or even an atheist, and Ladd Everitt can get stuffed.
These anti gunners really need to get a life.
I love how the left leaning anti-rights activist suddenly begins tossing out religious terms, trying to divide our 2A group. Apparently those phrases were convieniently forgotten a few weeks ago when celebrating gay marriage and wedding cake baking victories. Pound sand you cretins…
“We live in a society where a certain subset of gun owners fetishize firearms, talking them as something akin to religious idols,â€
The only people fetishizing guns and taking them as religious idol are him and him comrades. Nobody else asserts that guns have magical powers.
I love how The Left shrieks and whines about Republicans trying to “regulate the bedroom”, and then have the audacity to try and dictate both who can get married and how they can get married.
Sorry, but I always thought a wedding was a day for the bride and groom (at least until those gender-specific terms get banned) to celebrate their union however they see fit, and everyone else can either celebrate with them or get bent.
I’m sure they’d also have no problem with an anti-gun cake maker refusing to make a cake for my pro-gun wedding. And you know what? I wouldn’t either. But I can recognize the double standard.
