Cemetery lists the NICS data for the entire year of 2008, up through October. There was definitely a spike beginning in October as gun owners read the writing on the wall in regards to the election. It’ll be very interesting to see the final November and December numbers once they come out.
UPDATE: November 2008 numbers are 1,529,635, so yup, quite a spike. Last year’s November numbers were half a million less.
The November numbers were published over a week ago:
http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/nics/nics_checks_total.htm
They set a new one-month record, increased 29% from the previous month, compared to an average of 7% for the preceding three years. It was also an increase of 42% over the same month last year.
how do they look over the 2007 numbers?
I think you can expect the trend to flatten — AR-15s are backordered 4-6 months at this point. But don’t worry, Sebastian has assured us that there will be plenty of time to get your gun before the AWB2 is signed.
I wouldn’t go so far as to use the word “assure”, but that I don’t think it’ll be a near term priority for Congress or Obama.
Of course, there is an interesting side-point. If AR-15s are backordered 4-6 months (which they are) then the REAL demand for these guns in November and December is somewhere near 3-4 million.
Wow. The NICS stats don’t begin to describe it.
True, and pretty incredible if you think about it.
Bear in mind that a single NICS check could easily be ten guns. There’s no way to know how many guns were actually sold, but clearly demand is bonkers.
True! Good observation.
Now I know why the NRA needs cash…they were sending out the wheelbarrows to push the lies about high gun sales. ;-)
It all makes sense now.
Just curious, any thoughts on the lower numbers in the summer? People buying ammo instead or out vacationing?
Summer is just historically slow. Speaking for me, summer is when I’m spending money shooting what I’ve bought in the winter :)
