Drunken Regrets

I’m just glad that a tattoo has never been one of mine.  Via Radley comes this site that will translate various Asian character tattoos for people who don’t know what they really have inked on their skin.  It was only mildly amusing until I came across this one that made me laugh out loud:

A coworker of mine has a tattoo he got while he was out partying a couple a years ago and has absolutely no idea what it means. Can you tell us?

Thanks,

Tim

Why would anyone be proud of tattoo that says: “to commit any imaginable evil”?

Some of the other examples include a woman who thought her tattoo meant beauty, but found out it means sheep, and a girl who thought her tattoo said Princess, but it wasn’t quite accurate – more like palace.  It makes me very happy that even in my drunkest moments, having someone stab me with a needle never fell on my “list of things to do tonight.”

Things Get a Little More Interesting

Charlie Cook just updated his congressional race rankings, and our district was one of the changes issued.  Sebastian & I are hopeful for this race, but we also look at the reality of the situation.  Our district is attracting a significant number of Jersey & New York transplants – unfortunately, the types who bring their voting habits with them.  Even in the years of Tea Party excitement & serious organization here locally, the Democrats have the registration advantage and have consistently delivered more new voter registrations than the GOP since at least 2008.  Reality doesn’t bode well for us, especially when you factor in that the Democratic incumbent is a very good liar & fantastic fundraiser.

However, the political reporters have consistently labeled this a very competitive district for 2010.  I have questioned them about it, and pointed out that even Charlie Cook kept it rated as a “Lean Democrat” district even when others were considering it a top competitive race.  Well, that changed late yesterday.  Cook now considers this district to be “Toss Up.” While I won’t put all of my eggs in one basket when it comes to believing one political analyst over another, I guess this cements that they are seeing signs of life here that we just haven’t witnessed on the ground.

Interestingly, Cook also moved the ratings for several other Pennsylvania races to the right.  We have more competitive Congressional races by sheer number & percentage of districts according to some I’ve talked to about the state of politics here.  If you’ve got a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket, there are a lot of candidates who could use the help here in Pennsylvania to shake things up nationally.

Add in the fact that our State House could flip with just a handful of seat changes, and Pennsylvania is going to be a very interesting state to watch.

Animal Rights Activists Abusing our Court System

Locally, animal rights extremists have been targeting a gun club that hosts pigeon shoots near Philadelphia.  The PR problems this creates for the community are another issue to debate another day.  Today, it’s about the legal issues.

Pigeon shoots are legal in Pennsylvania.  There’s no doubt about it, and the legislature hasn’t made any moves (so far) to seriously look at banning it.  (There are bills introduced, but no real action has been taken on them.)  However, the fact that it’s a legal activity hasn’t stopped a local official from trying to clog our courts with charges against the gun club.  Fortunately, our county DA is willing to stand up for shooters.

District Attorney David Heckler has asked the court to dismiss animal cruelty charges against the Philadelphia Gun Club and instructed pigeon shooters there to make a $200 donation to the Bucks County SPCA for a wounded bird that wasn’t immediately killed by hunters.

At Heckler’s request, Bensalem District Judge Len Brown said he will no longer consider the June 18 complaint filed by Humane Society officer Johnna Seeton.

Seeton, a court appointed officer, alleges that pigeon shoots at the Bensalem gun club violate animal cruelty laws. But Heckler said, “the shooting of live pigeons is unquestionably legal.”

The district attorney said he perceived the citation was “motivated by a desire to discourage live pigeon shoots themselves, despite the fact that the Pennsylvania Legislature has repeatedly and specifically declined to outlaw this activity.”

The animal rights nutcases are outraged by the dismissal and for being called out for their tactics – attempting to use police power to regulate something that is perfectly legal just because they personally don’t like the activity.  So now they have resorted to claiming the DA has been bought by the gun club.

Their evidence?  The attorney representing the club once made a donation to the local Republican Party long before this case ever came up.  The DA is a Republican.  Don’t you see the obvious corruption involved?  They are Republicans!  And one Republican donated to a Republican group which means that all Republican politicians are now corrupt!  It’s so damn obvious to them…

Unfortunately, this abuse of the system and blatantly false allegations of corruption are being funded by Bob Barker.  If these are the sort of tactics he endorses, then I’m going to cheer every time something bad happens on the boat he donated (well, donated the funds to buy) for Whale Wars.  (Who am I kidding?  I already cheer every time something goes wrong.  It usually comes after the laughing.)

Democratic Officials Lining Up Behind Self-Proclaimed Tea Party Candidates

It looks like suburban Philadelphia Democrats are working hard to ensure that Republicans not only have to overcome the margin of error, but also the margin of fraud. Their first step is lining up self-proclaimed tea party type candidates to funnel off votes from Republican challengers.

I already mentioned the shenanigans in PA-7, and it’s amazing how slimy Democratic candidate Bryan Lentz and the local party leaders are trying to be by claiming that they have nothing to do with the third party candidate. In this age, you can’t hide.  Here are some of the names and titles of Democratic officials and activists who pushed Jim Schneller over the edge to get on the ballot released by PA2010:

  • Colleen Guiney is the head of the Swarthmore, PA Democratic Committee.
  • Joseph Gallagher is a Democratic Committeeman from Aston, PA.
  • Timothy Willard is a former Lentz staffer who previously worked on his state house campaign.
  • Nicholas Allred is an officer with the Swarthmore College Democrats – an organization that already backed the Democratic candidate.  (Election fraud – you can’t get started too early!)
  • Democratic activists Rocco Polidoro and Arthur Manos signed petitions to get Lentz on the ballot and then turned around to collect signatures for the third party candidate.

Upon further research, PA2010’s editor added this startling fact about the (legal) fraud at work in this self-proclaimed tea party campaign:

With the exception of Schneller himself and one registered Republican, it seems that all of Schneller’s circulators were registered Democrats, and most of them can be tied to Lentz by far less than Six Degrees of Separation. At least five of those circulators also gathered signatures for Lentz. And as we noted from the beginning, one of them is Colleen Guiney, the volunteer who Lentz once called “the hardest worker on my campaign.”

I don’t know how Lentz’s campaign and the Democratic officials can keep a straight face while they issue denial after denial.

It’s worth noting that local tea party groups have asked Schneller to leave the race, and they are making clear that they in no way support his candidacy.

The Independence Hall Tea Party Association, the largest such group in the region, endorsed Meehan in the spring and asked Schneller last year to quit the race, said Teri Adams, a board member of the group’s political action committee. …

The Independence Hall group and the Delaware County Patriots sent Schneller a letter Wednesday asking him again to drop out of the race, or at least to withdraw the signatures that Lentz volunteers and supporters had gathered.

In the meantime, we’re dealing with it here in PA-8, too. Here are the (so far) announced names of Democratic officials pushing a candidate who attended a Tea Party Forum in January only to tell attendees that they suck for attending and suck for voting.

  • Brian Caplan now works for the state Democratic Party and is a former staffer for Democratic candidate Patrick Murphy.
  • Jessica Milinichik also now reportedly works for the state party, but she was with the Murphy campaign as recently as a few weeks ago.

The third party candidate is expected to pull voters away from the Republican candidate, though the Democrats, again, deny any involvement.  Unfortunately, our local tea party group hasn’t issued any statements about this kooky candidate, even though he got up and insulted them at their own event.  Hopefully, they will make it clear to their supporters that they aren’t backing his candidacy.

I had my first experience with dirty politics from Philadelphia-area Democrats in 2008 when MoveOn volunteers canvassed our neighborhood and destroyed all of the GOP signs they recognized.  Not only were the McCain signs in our yards cut, but the frames were pulled out of our lawns and bent beyond easy repair.  Fortunately for me, I had a stash of extra frames from another campaign that didn’t need as much help, so I set out to repair the ones on our block.  I expect the same kind of shenanigans this year.

I’m not opposed to third party candidates, but I am opposed to those who accept help from one party just to screw over another candidate when they have no intention of running a real campaign.

The Anti-Carry Bill that Won’t Die

It looks like the anti-gun politicians have learned a little something from the worst of New Jersey’s political traditions. When their bills are about to go down in defeat, they yank them from the floor. That way there’s never a real “no” vote against them, and they can keep pulling them up periodically to test the waters for any new votes.

This bill has to be defeated. Until Philadelphia stops abusing their authority over carry licenses, there’s no room to even talk about this subject.

Shooting Back at PETA

PETA doesn’t really expect anyone to shoot back when they start attacking stars who disagree with their radical all-vegan, no pets/kill pets agenda. I can somewhat understand why they don’t want to give PETA any attention, but sometimes a well-written response can help our causes far more than theirs.

Only one episode of “American Idol” contestant Kristy Lee Cook’s new hunting show, “Goin’ Country with Kristy Lee Cook,” aired on Versus before the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals started firing shots at the singer. …

“Goin’ Country,” a reality show which started its eight-episode run Sunday, follows Cook while she participates in hunts across the nation, all while trying to also bag a recording deal. Featuring some of the performer’s new music, each episode follows the seventh-season “Idol” finalist as she heads to Texas in search of trophy whitetail deer, visits Kansas and Wyoming for pheasant hunting, takes part in her first black bear hunt in Wisconsin and Illinois, and is challenged while turkey hunting in Tennessee and Missouri. …

Cook did not take the comments lying down, defending not only herself but all hunters, and issued the following response:

“Given that hunters have done more for American wildlife conservation than any other group in history, I make no apology for being one,” she said. “Indeed, I join the ranks of millions of American hunters who celebrate our outdoor heritage and who conserve millions of acres of wild lands. These same people support more than 600,000 jobs across the country and provide a critical voice to encourage more investment in American conservation.”

Cook added that, while she could understand people who oppose her decision to hunt, she has taken several non-hunters out with her — including her sister — and changed their minds about the sport.

Unlike PETA, this hunter doesn’t kill any animal that comes into her care:

The series will also highlight Cook’s work with the “Kristy Lee Horse Heaven Foundation,” a charity which helps rescue horses that have been abused or neglected.

Beating down PETA, recruiting more female hunters, saving horses, and getting out the message that hunters were the first conservationists – while successfully harvesting a pretty awesome collection of animals – that’s a show I could get behind.

Give Up Your Gun for a Sandwich

If the sandwich doesn’t convince you to give up your guns, how about a bag of chips? A soda with no refills? Any takers yet? No? Well, I’m just shocked.

Three days later, Richard Pagliarella opened the second location of his Ricci Bros. Hoagies shop on the same corner where Addison was shot multiple times.

Feeling compelled to do something, Pagliarella offered two hoagies, a soda and chips for each firearm brought to the store last week.

“I was hoping we would get one [gun], save one life and have one less gun on the street,” Pagliarella said.

But they received none.

RodentGate Consequences

Who knew that an infestation of rodents would lead to lower sales at the State Capitol cafeteria?

Add One Mouse, Subtract $674,000.
That’s how much sales are down in the Capitol cafeteria, apres Rodentgate, the Patriot-News reports this morning.
Sales for the first two quarters of 2009 totaled nearly $1.1 million, while figures for the first two quarters of this year were just $407,738.

In addition to rodents, the cafeteria wasn’t properly washing dishes. Shockingly, people have apparently been avoiding it like the plague – probably out of fears of catching the plague.

Thank goodness for John Micek’s reporting on RodentGate or we would have eaten there at the gun rally in April. Fortunately, we knew better and stuck with a bottle soda until we could escape to the brewery nearby. However, I did feel a bit of guilt as we watched other gun owners chow down at the cafeteria.

Third Party Shenanigans to Make Even a Cynic Roll Their Eyes

The ballot access laws in Pennsylvania are notoriously tough for anyone who doesn’t have the nomination of a major political party, so it makes for big news when people qualify. In two local Congressional races, it’s likely to give us some very severe headaches in seats that are otherwise rated extremely competitive or complete toss-ups.

The most frustrating is the birther who plans to try and pull votes away from the pro-gun Republican nominee in PA-7, Pat Meehan, by claiming to be a Tea Party candidate backed by far left Democrats. (In reality, there was a Tea Party candidate in the race earlier this year, but he ran as a Republican in the primary and was defeated.) He’s pretending that he had no idea his most helpful supporters just happen to be officials with the Democratic Party, some of whom have been publicly recognized by the anti-gun Democratic campaign for their grassroots support. The Democrats aren’t even trying to deny what they did here, and they are eating it up. They don’t think their guy can win on a race based on issues, so they are instead trying to add fringe candidates to the right side in order to split off any votes they can.

What’s worse is that these same “grassroots supporters” for the birther also filed petition challenges in the primary campaign to pressure all of the Democrats not personally chosen by party leaders off of the ballot. They really are afraid of any competition at all and will use any tactic other than a clean campaign to get their way.

Here in our neck of the woods, there’s a new independent candidate in PA-8. By new, I mean just got on the ballot. Because he’s the kind of guy who runs for every office every election cycle. Oh, and he told Tea Party supporters at a forum that voters are all stupid because a) they vote, and b) don’t vote for him and his brand of crazy.

Tom debuted a brand new campaign strategy at tonight’s forum: Tell voters how much they suck. They suck for being voters. They suck for possibly being Republicans. They suck because they don’t vote for Tom. They suck for even turning out to such an event.

When not telling voters how much they suck, Tom indicated he may not honor treaties, and it didn’t really sound like he would give much thought to helping out Israel should they get attacked.

He’s likely going to try and appeal to angry Republicans who can’t get over the fact that their favorite candidates didn’t survive the primary. That’s exactly what the Democrats would like to happen – at least by a cursory glance at the race. After all, this is a blue district that would really only go red with a Republican focused on economic issues – the message the party appears to try and focus on this year. In other words, this is the year the seat could go back, especially since the GOP nominee is a former Congressman who only lost by 1,500 votes last time he ran.

Except, oddly enough, it looks like the Democrats might be lining up to kick Angry Crazy Candidate Tom off the ballot. I suspect it’s because they would rather have disaffected Republicans vote Democrat to “send a message to the GOP” rather than voting third party. They may well need every vote they can get, even if it’s just a spiteful vote from some conservatives being pissy about things not going their way every single time.

Ultimately, this means we’re going to have to work even harder for pro-gun candidates to not only beat the competition from both sides – Democrat & Crazy – but also overcome the margin of error fraud. I have a feeling that I’ll be hoarse come September with all of the phone calls I’ll be making and doors I’ll be knocking on.

Profile of California Sheriff Challenging Ammo Sales Law

Chuckling at the surreal:

Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker didn’t know that he would be named as the lead plaintiff on a suit challenging a new law that would require handgun ammunition buyers to register with the government.

“I wasn’t expecting that,” he said Tuesday, chuckling as he recounted opening his mail last week and seeing the civil complaint with “Sheriff Clay Parker v. The State of California” on the cover sheet.

It’s a very friendly piece worth a click.
