Chris Cox Goes After Media

(This has turned into a live blog post – at least as long as I have power. I wasn’t fully charged this morning, unfortunately.)

Chris Cox is making great jokes about the media’s lack of understanding of the issue during the opening of the Leadership Forum. He’s talking about the “media” in general, but bloggers should know that Chris is not clueless about blogs, and he knows the value of new media. In the meetings where he has a bit more time to “explain” it to other folks, he recognizes the role the blogosphere plays in raising the profile of gun issues and building community within the movement.

I’ve got video of a special guest who sang the national anthem. You might know her father – Scott Brown. I’ll upload it when I have easier access to power. The press area is so big that I don’t think we can fit in many places in this arena. There are 10 cameras here, and I’m assuming that includes at least one pool camera that will serve multiple networks. There are also several print folks here, at least based on the notebooks.

Wayne is doing a very interesting introduction right now. He’s asking law enforcement, fire fighters, veterans, educators, health care workers, trade workers, and then stay at home moms to stand up to illustrate that NRA is made up of “real people.” The crowd goes nuts for the stay at home moms and veterans especially. “See us for who we really are, and see if you can finally tell it straight.” -Wayne LaPierre

This makes me very paranoid about using this tactic in my presentation on Saturday. Eek. Hope they are still ready to get on their feet tomorrow!

The Governor of North Carolina was scheduled, but she had to send a video message. She’s emphasizing hunting and sportsmen’s activities. She’s asking people to come back, but the local media is not so welcoming. I’m also hearing many folks boo her name – I guess Democrats here in North Carolina have a fight set out for them later this year.

Haley Barbour is up, and Chris mentioned that Mississippi didn’t go the way of New Orleans. Instead, “You loot, we shoot” signs went up. Barbour joked the message was, if you shoot looters, we don’t prosecute. Man, this guy is so seriously Southern. He’s talking about friends with full autos – now that’s not a conversation you can have with a politician often! Now Barbour has switched to a message about limited government and elections.

The arena staff are screaming “Popcorn” as they walk the aisles. I admit, I’m so hungry. But, they should be told that this is not the kind of event where you actually scream out what you have. The Time Warner arena does have some beautiful HD screens. We’re actually not that far away, but I prefer the screens.

John Thune is up. He mentioned that the crowd heard from Chuck Cunningham, but I think 99% of people are confused. Chuck heads up federal affairs, and he doesn’t speak at events like this. But unless you know quite a bit about their operations, you wouldn’t know who on earth he was talking about. Thune is now emphasizing his concealed carry amendment & the vote, but now it’s a switch to the Courts. He says that nominees must be specifically questioned about their Second Amendment positions.

Now we’re into hunting stories. Apparently, Thune is a grouse hunter. He shot his first grouse with a single shot .410. Just in case you were curious. He says he’s taken his daughters to the range & out hunting. That’s a nice message to hear.

We’re now on to Heath Shuler, one of those evil right wing Democrats the local paper was condemning. He’s telling stories about how he grew up. I actually feel sorry for sincerely pro-gun Democrats. They cannot defend their leadership who constantly put them in bad positions. Apparently, today is his son’s 9th birthday. They hunt together, apparently wild hogs. He bought his son his own AR-15. He believes he may be the member of Congress who buys the most ammunition. That would be an interesting debate to have. Great photo op for the cause, that’s for sure.

According to Schuler, he dropped legislation on Wednesday about Eddie Eagle. I’ll be honest, I’ve been cut off from news since Tuesday. He says there are more than 105 co-sponsors, and he expects more than 200 by the end of this week.

Larry Potterfield of Midway is speaking now. He’s modifying Paul Revere’s call to “the Liberals are coming!” The crowd goes nuts. He’s got on his gold jacket – recognition that he has donated or pledged more than $1 million over their lifetimes. The way that the Advancement Office has stepped up and engaged wealthier people who are pro-gun, but maybe didn’t do anything about it, is really commendable. It means that the outreach programs will be fully funded for years.

Wow. Midway’s Round Up program has now raise $5.2 million. And with that, I need to switch to video & Twitter.

Checking in from Charlotte

Wow. So Sebastian is in the Firearms Law Seminar with no power and no wifi, and I just sat down in the Leadership Forum with many of the other bloggers here at the Blog Bash.

This city has never seen an event so big. It’s a massive infusion of money into their economy. So how do they greet us? By asking us not to shoot them. Fan-freakin’-tastic. That makes me never want to even visit Charlotte again.

As Jim Geraghty (who is sitting in front of me), points out today, they also call it a massive right-wing convention while we have speakers like the Democratic governor, Congressman Heath Shuler, and my favorite Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren.

As a matter of space, I’m not sure Charlotte could host the event again. They had to cancel the banquet this year because there is no space large enough. It’s now another speaking event. The arena is already packed, with a full floor and up the sides. There are huge lines outside. It’s a great day to be an NRA member, even if Charlotte is a little small for our needs.

Sestak & Specter Cheer Gun Control

Last weekend, Arlen Specter & Joe Sestak took turns embracing various forms of gun control. We captured video of their exchange, and here it what came out of it.

Joe Sestak was flat out lying about NRA’s endorsement in the race. About a week and a half before they ever debated, NRA had already endorsed Pat Toomey in the US Senate race. Arlen Specter’s grade has taken a tumble since he has voted against us every time since switching parties.

Berkeley Doesn’t Stand Up to the Man Very Well

I just couldn’t help but chuckle and picture hippies declaring how they’ll fight “the man” on this one. Except, that’s not at all what happened.

In response to a pre-litigation demand letter sent by lawyers for the NRA and CRPA Foundation, on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, the Berkeley City Council voted unanimously to repeal that city’s ban on the possession of certain semiautomatic rifles, which had remained “on the books” as Municipal Code Section 13.47 despite being obviously preempted by state law.

The repeal is the culmination of discussions between attorneys for the NRA and CRPA and the Berkeley City Attorney’s office. The City of Berkeley initially resisted all requests by the NRA and CRPA to repeal this ordinance. But the City Attorney’s report to the City Council makes clear that the motivation to finally repeal the ordinance was the threat of litigation from NRA/CRPA.

One person objected to the repealing of the ordinance during public comment, but the City Attorney quickly corrected him that, as explained by the NRA/CRPA letter, this is a settled legal matter for which the City of Berkeley has no recourse.

It’s a good thing in the end. It saves precious litigation money that can be used to fight more meaningful fights. I just find it very funny to see how quickly those radicals in Berkeley back down.

The Unpleasant Reality of Politics

It’s true that money cannot buy votes on election day. But money can buy radio and television ads for a candidate to explain their positions. It can buy yard signs and bumper stickers to raise name recognition. It can buy pizza for volunteers. It can rent the phones needed to do phone banks. It can buy the t-shirts volunteers wear outside of the polling places.

You get the idea. Money is mandatory in politics.

So it’s very disheartening to find out what we thought was a pretty reasonable fundraising surge for one candidate here was actually a personal loan. Unfortunately, Gloria Carlineo, as feisty as she has been on the campaign trail, hasn’t been able to put up very good numbers for her campaign. She has only raised about $5,200.

If she plans to serious take on Patrick Murphy in November, she would have to learn to raise money in a big way. Considering Murphy is one the Democratic Party’s new star fundraisers, and with the huge cost of doing political business in this media market, there’s no room to learn on the job.

This is why Sebastian and I have hoped that some of these Tea Party inspired candidates would consider running for lower offices. It’s not that we wouldn’t like to see them in Congress, it’s just that cutting your teeth in a race so fierce and expensive isn’t likely to end well. I would love to see some of these guys (and gals) on the ballot for state representative in some seats. Hell, there are some Bucks Republicans who I think need to be primaried.

I had a commenter on my blog the other day who admitted he has never been involved in politics before, and that if his favorite Tea Party candidates lose in the primary races this year, he’ll sit out in November. That isn’t a winning strategy. In fact, that guarantees long-term losses. What would be far more productive is for him to help us vote out the biggest tax-and-spend guy in November (Patrick Murphy) regardless of who wins the GOP nomination in May. Then, use the next couple of years to shape some really good candidates for other offices so they can learn how to raise money and build connections on a local and statewide level. That is the way to change things for the long haul.

So if Carlineo doesn’t make it through the primary, I hope she doesn’t drop out of politics. I do realize that the Bucks County GOP leadership have treated her horribly, but giving up isn’t the way to change things. I’ve been to Bucks County GOP events, so I can assure you that we will outlast them. Many of them already have a foot in the grave. It’s just a matter of time, energy, and, yes, money.

Crazed European Protesters

I will never understand why Europeans accept the level of violence from their protesters that they do – they just sit back and take it.

I’ve been watching coverage of Greek protests against spending cuts, and at what point do the citizens lie down and let the anarchy take over? It started with throwing rocks and burning cars. They also destroyed shop fronts & set businesses on fire. Now, the protesters are throwing molotov cocktails directly at police officers in order to set them on fire. Yesterday, they threw one into a bank to kill three people and injure more.

I’d like to think that here, we would tell our police officers to get rid of them with any means available. I can’t fathom that if a radical group started marching through a city, killing bystanders, and trying to set police officers on fire, we would just ask them to push back politely. At what point does your society decide that it no longer wants to defend itself from arbitrary mob attack?

Should Wayne LaPierre be Sent to Gitmo?

According to the Washington Post, NRA should now be considered a terrorist organization for supporting civil liberties.

Is the NRA a terrorist organization?

By George W. Bush’s standard — you’re either with us or against us in the fight against terrorism — NRA chief Wayne LaPierre should be just a few frequent-flier miles short of a free ticket to Gitmo right about now.

Family Traditions & Heirlooms

Even though my family wasn’t anti-gun, there aren’t any traditions of shooting or hunting, and I won’t get any guns passed down to me that are part of some multi-generational tradition. But that’s okay. My first gun was a gift from a special friend and still means a lot to me.

In welcoming a new contributor to Bitchin’ in the Kitchen, this bit in her first post really stuck out for me:

When Samuel was age 14, he saved up enough to buy a $500 rifle with his own money. This was no small feat. He saved for many months – birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, worked at his grandfather’s farm, as well as around our house, to earn the money to pay for his gun. It’s an item of great sentimental value, and one he will keep until he decides to pass it on to his grandchildren. With that gun will go many stories of deer taken and deer missed, hunts shared with his father, cousins, uncles, and grandfathers, lessons learned, such as, working hard for something that lasted his lifetime.

Samuel is Virginia Gal’s son, and oh my goodness, there are some adorable pics that she included with the post. Check it out, and maybe I can get Granny – my mom & Virginia Gal’s friend – to talk her into sharing some good game recipes.

More on the Caving Gun Club

PAIndependent has done some research into the Keith Olbermann-loving Elstonville Sportsman’s Association and finds that their latest excuses for canceling the LiveFreePA event don’t really match their history.

The club’s board of directors met Monday night “to discuss the recent events that have unfolded in the media pertaining to the event scheduled for May 8,” according to Steve Lowe, an Elstonville board member. “Elstonville is a sportsmen’s association and will not be affiliated in any way with political actions and/or statements to the media or the general public. We…will not be associated with events such as this.”

Get that, they never do anything political. Which is why they hosted LiveFreePA in 2009 with Ted Nugent. Sure. Oh, and there’s that pesky fact that they let a Republican lawmaker hold a fundraising shoot there in 2008. And who could forget that they are hosting another directly partisan fundraiser again the following week?

The people who criticized the event would be the first to shut down the gun club if given the opportunity. As mentioned yesterday, there’s Keith Olbermann. But locally, it was Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Hoeffel who complained. First, he’s no one. He was once a Congressman who no one liked, so they booted him out of office. He’s now a County Commissioner just outside of Philadelphia who is running somewhere between last and next to last place in a crowded primary. He has endorsed a whole range of gun control.

I suspect that Elstonville Sportsman’s Association is suffering from a problem that I’ve seen at other area gun clubs. Namely, that they are scared of politics and “new” things. They want to sit down comfortably and stick their heads in the sand while the world changes around them. It doesn’t matter that they people they cave to are actively leading the fight to take their guns, close gun clubs, and kill the shooting sports culture.

At the very least, their board is on the record lying to pro-gun groups about banning all political events while turning around and hosting partisan fundraisers. I’m not sure if that makes their actions any better, or actually worse.

I’ve worked with gun clubs in several states. I am most concerned about the health of the clubs I’ve seen here in Pennsylvania. Some of them actively try to keep shooters out, others pretend that politics doesn’t exist even when it surrounds and threatens their sport, and then you have Elstonville which thinks that giving into the Joe Hoeffel agenda is more important than supporting an organization that has promoted liberty and firearm freedom in Harrisburg. Now they are putting up the flag of no politics ever, which means they will forever close any access they had to local pro-gun politicians.

I’ve heard it best described as the need for a hundred mini-Cincinnati revolts (i.e. the Annual Meeting fight that lead to the creation of NRA-ILA & finally got gun owners involved in politics). Gun clubs should be about the shooting sports first and foremost. But because politics will mean the difference between prosperity in the culture and taking the very guns we use to compete and defend our lives, it means that clubs cannot sit out of the game. In a healthy club, members even find out that a) political work isn’t very hard, and b) it can even be a little fun, especially if it’s social and there is food involved. By sitting out of the game, club leaders are throwing their own members under the bus. Members shouldn’t sit idly by and let that happen.

PA Gun Club Caves to Keith Olbermann

Let’s pretend you are a member of a gun club. Keith Olbermann attacks you because you’re going to allow right-of-center folks to come to your shooting range to shoot guns & very possibly say less than pleasant things about far left policies & socialism. Why would you cave to Keith Olbermann? He’s not your friend. He doesn’t even believe in the Second Amendment and declared SCOTUS Justice Antonin Scalia as the “Worst Person in the World” for writing the Heller opinion.

Apparently, if you’re on the board of Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, you vote to cave to Keith Olbermann. Really?

They were to host a fundraising shoot by the Commonwealth Foundation next weekend, and part of the arranged fun was to include targeting a car with bad policy names written on it – cap and trade, Obamacare, and card check. The idea of conservatives blowing holes through their policy positions painted on the side of a junker car (perhaps a clunker not turned in during Cash for Clunkers?) sent Keith Olbermann’s head spinning, along with some others in the media.

Just minutes ago, Commonwealth Foundation announced that Elstonville’s leaders have pulled the plug on the event because of pressure from people who don’t even support their right to have a gun club.

In the 11th hour, under intense pressure from those who would deny the freedoms in the First and Second Amendments, the host of the Commonwealth Foundation’s second annual LiveFreePA celebration pulled the plug. Due to the short notice, the Commonwealth Foundation will reschedule LiveFreePA for the fall, at a club that stands tall for our rights and freedoms.

The Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association’s decision is regrettable, but more regrettable are the attacks on this lighthearted and safe event by left-wing pundits and gun-control advocates. This reminds us all that if the inalienable rights of citizens to express and protect themselves are to survive, those who cherish them must stand firm against those who seek to erode or limit those rights. This incident underscores how vulnerable our freedom truly is, and the need to celebrate and defend it anew.

Seriously? The gun club has no statement on the matter, so if there is more to this, they are keeping their lips locked.
