New Banner

I played around for a bit and finally came up with something I could live with.  You may have to hit shift-refresh to have it load the new graphic.  Of course, if you think you can come up with something better, feel free to give it a try.  If I get multiple entries that I like, I might just rotate banners occasionally.  I wasn’t able to incorporate a firearm in any way I liked, so I decided to leave it out.

Let me know what you think

New Banner Idea

My graphics arts skills leave a lot to be desired.  But after thinking a bit about what I wanted, I came up with an idea for a new banner, but I’m not sure I really like it.  One of the things I’m trying to achieve is to tie the gun issue in with the graphic, and in with the blog’s title.  I originally picked the title of the blog because I was resistant to starting my own blog, despite people telling me I should.  So when I started one, it was the proverbial cold day in hell, after my long insistence I had better things to do.

Here’s what I was working on.  Let me know what you think.  You can tell me it sucks, since I’ll probably agree with you.  Anyone is welcome to come up with something better, and if I like it, I’ll owe you some beer.

New Graphic Contest

I was talking to Dave Kopel at the Annual Meeting about the fact that my headlining banner is getting long in the tooth.  I tend to agree.  Truth be told, if I could go back, I would probably change the name of the blog too, but it’s too late for that.  I never thought anyone would actually take this seriously.

So I’m going to have a contest to see if anyone can submit a headline banner close to what I’m looking for.  I am looking for a drawing, rather than a picture, but my idea is an AR-15, with a muzzle flash (rather embellished flash) and a snowflake in the flash.  If anyone wants to have a stab at it, send the graphic to my address listed in the top corner.  Click on the graphic to make it readable.

Whew!

Well, that was my first national radio apperance.  Hopefully I did OK!  Anyway, for those of you looking for the post that was alluded to on the show, you can click here.  Tonight Bitter and I will be preparing to head to Louisville, and tomorrow we head out.  Posting might be light tomorrow.

UPDATE: Apparently John Popp got his Sebastians confused.

New Server Time

We’ve been experiencing too many outages lately, largely due to one of the drives in the server acting up.  This is something I need to remedy, but I’m thinking maybe it’s time to remedy it with a new server for the blog.  I’m looking at getting the parts in to do it.

Congrats to Tam

Congratulations to Tam for getting a cool writing gig!  She’s writing for Low End Mac.  My first Mac was a IIsi in 1992.  I soon realized “This is a lot better than Windows 3.1″ and used it pretty exclusively, even though I wonder how I ever lived with a 12″ display.  Later upgraded to a IIci with a larger 14” display.  Briefly used a NeXT cube, until the novelty wore off and I realized it was nice to have software.  I actually skipped the whole PowerPC generation, using Linux pretty exlusively during that time, until I bought my MacBook a year and a half ago and thought “This is a lot better than Linux.”  Granted, I still use Linux for serving the blog and for a DVR, but not for desktop work.  There will be no going back to the world of Windows for me.
