Why Gun Control Fails

Because Americans generally don’t support it when faced with the stark reality of a temporary breakdown in law and order.

Charlie Marshall, a towboat captain who plans to watch over his home in Gretna, had a bleaker view of local law enforcement abilities.

“If the cops are looting, who’s going to protect my ass?” he asked.

After Katrina, some police officers were spotted taking basic supplies from stores, and, in isolated cases, items that didn’t appear necessary for survival.

Though frustrated after having his purchase of a .22-caliber rifle delayed by a routine background check, Marshall still had several boxes of bullets and buckshot for his shotgun and 9 mm pistol.

I would say if he’s got the shotgun and 9mm pistol the .22 rifle isn’t going to add much, unless it’s a sacrificial gun to turn over to the NOPD in the event they start confiscating firearms again.

Law Abiding Gun Owner

Another law abiding gun owner and concealed carry permit holder has to go stopping an armed robber again:

In the first incident, the 14-year-old and two other suspects were trying to rob the ex-officer at gunpoint while he was delivering a pizza about 1:15 a.m. on Lesher Street near Bridge, police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore said.

The boy pointed the gun at the former cop while his cohorts – also believed to be teenagers – attempted to go through the victim’s pockets, Vanore said.

But the deliveryman – whose name was withheld by police – was able to reach into a pocket and pull out a semiautomatic Glock, which he had a permit to carry, Vanore said.

Of course, now you have two more children added to the Brady Campaign list of kids killed by gunfire every year.  Seems to me the proper thing to be concerned about is that we have 14 year old kids robbing people at gunpoint in our city.

Just as an aside: pocket carrying a Glock?  I hope he used a pocket holster.  A Glock should not be pocked carried.  It needs to be in a holster.

Don’t Mess with Octogenarians

Especially when they are wielding revolvers.  I would note that despite the Brady Campaign’s celebration of reasonable gun laws, they did everything they could to prevent people in DC from having the tools necessary to defend their homes.

Law Abiding Gun Owner

In York County, Pennsylvania, we have an example of a concealed carry permit holder doing the right thing:

Instead, a man, Douglas Need, had been driving recklessly when he swerved in front of a car and was hit in the rear. In a fit of road rage, he stormed out of his car, went back to two young women and a baby in the car that hit his, reached through the driver’s window and started beating the driver very violently. She was able to break free and drive her car to the only place she could go — the parking lot next to the street. Need ran back to his car, squealed his tires into the parking lot and looked as though he was going to broadside the women’s car with them still inside.

Read the whole thing.  This time, the press covered it, because there was a body.  In most instances where attackers decide discretion is the better part of valor, no such coverage will be forthcoming.

Hat Tip: War on Guns

New Sheriff in Town

Orange County California has a new sheriff.  What is one of her first acts?

“The good-cause threshold you have to meet has gone up,” Nighswonger said. “The prior sheriff had more of a right-to-carry philosophy. Some of the things that were considered good cause won’t be now.”

Orange County has now gone from, essentially, right to carry, to right denied, unless you can convince the Sheriff to allow you to exercise your right to self-defense.  Hopefully she’ll deem you worthy.

Oh, and it looks like she has a blog.  No comments though.

Concealed Carry Holder Defends Against Road Rage

Check out the story of this concealed carry permit holder:

A man driving a Porsche pulled in behind him and approached him carrying a baseball bat. The man was yelling about the student’s driving.

The student pulled a Glock 23 pistol from his glove box and got out of his car, the report stated.

The man with the bat put his hands up, returned to the Porsche and drove away.

The student called the sheriff’s office from his parents’ Hilton Head home. He was not charged in the incident.

No doubt this one won’t be showing up on the Brady blog.
