Apparently this can be done by fiat in Washington State, and has been. I understand framing an issue, and traditional ammunition sounds a lot more like mom and apple pie than lead ammunition, but I’ve always hated using terms that basically try to throw some sheets over the elephant in the room.

Lead’s been what ammunition has been made out of since we’ve had firearms, so in that sense it’s traditional. But everyone knows the issue is the lead, and there’s probably not going to be much papering over that.

Joe Huffman has an interesting report on accuracy of various kinds of ammunition fired out of a pistol. While I would not claim to be an expert IHMSA shooter, at those ranges, I’ve noticed that some ammo hits more than others. Seems especially noticeable in rimfire calibers.

Of course, the only thing this convinces our opponents of, is that semi-automatic firearms ought to be equally banned. Keep in mind this guy knows what he’s doing with a full-auto as well. An amateur is going to spray more wildly, and waste a lot more ammunition.

If I had to go against a gun wielding madman, I’d almost want him to waste all his ammunition firing on full-auto. Unless the guy brought a belt-fed machine gun and a while lot of ammo, he’s going to be empty with not much to show for it pretty quickly, and there’s only so much you can carry. Worst fear? Shotgun wielding madman. You’re probably not getting up from that, if hit.

Looks like American Defensive Enterprises are taking their embarrassing videos offline. I guess some attention from the big guns was more than they wanted to deal with. Sorry if you didn’t have a chance to see them first.

Tam has a promotional video up from ADE training academy that has to be seen to be believed. Go watch, and be horrified. I’m wondering who these outfits are marketing to. Is the market for training of counterstrike kiddies turned gun owner growing faster than the common wisdom of the shooting community can reach them? Tam notes:

It is only a matter of time until some chiropodist at a weekend SWAT fantasy camp gets his kidneys blown out his navel by the Bushhamster of the stranger behind him in the stack preparing to practice breaching and clearing, and somebody like 20/20 or 60 Minutes is going to have a frickin’ field day with it.

Apparently there’s some pant s**tting hysteria (PSH) going on over a firing range which is located near an airport. At least PSH from local authorities. The FAA has apparently never been concerned about the location of the range, and neither has Scott AFB, which unlike the civilian airport, has its flightpath for the main runway directly over the range.

My opinion would be that the airport is just a pretense. Someone doesn’t like the icky gun range in their neighborhood. Aviation folks and shooters actually have a lot in common in terms of our hobbies. If anyone out there has Netflix, I would highly recommend getting the documentary “One Six Right,” which is about Van Nuys Airport in California, the busiest General Aviation airport int he world. Many of the fears aviation guys have, about airports being closed because of noise complaints, and the loss of people interested in flying, reflect many of our same problems. Much like a shooting range, once neighbors manage to shut it down, it’s gone forever.

I always thought lawn gnomes were goofy, but this one is awesome.

Thanks to Tam for the pointer. Only thing is I’m not a big fan of using the slide release versus racking manually. Racking manually works on any gun, and it’s a coarser movement than required for the finer movement of pressing down hard on a slide release.

Some local municipalities in Virginia are up in arms about being forced to allow, by state law, discharging of air guns provided reasonable care is taking for projectiles not to cross property boundaries. It’s amazing to me the kinds of things people will get hysterical about. To me this stipulation means you need an appropriate backstop, and if you have one, what’s the big deal?
