The Palin Speech

Tonight Bitter and I watched Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech for the nomination for Vice President.  Palin definitely has her delivery down.  She even said Minnesota that weird way people from there say it, and she recovered from her one fumble with a grace George W. Bush only wishes he had.  What I did not get from her manner of speaking is an unprepared amateurish politician.  She far surpasses the current occupant of the Oval Office in terms of speech making.  Biden is going to have his work cut out for him.  After 8 years of having to listen to him (the Bush Him, not the Biden him, although he makes me want to gouge my ears out too), it’ll be nice to have someone who’s pleasant to listen to (and look at).

There were a lot of shots of her family.  Her youngest daughter Piper seems to be a total ham on camera.  She either has a future in pagents or politics.  Seriously, these people are way too attractive for politics.  They put the Kennedy’s to shame.  No wonder the media hates them.  They even look good in HD, which is a harsh mistress for a lot of people.  It has to really get in the left’s craw that these people come from small town Alaska, and not an uppity cosmopolitan city.  I am going to enjoy this election.  It’s the kind you’ll want to make some popcorn for.

The chant for the Republican convention appears to be “Drill Baby! Drill!”  I half expected them to erect a drilling rig right there on the convention floor and to get started.  That would have been handy, because Palin’s hubby could have oversaw the operation.  I’m not sure whether there is any oil under the streets of St. Paul, but if there were, I’m sure that crowd could find it.

After seeing Palin in action, I feel much better about the choice.  She’ll be a capable candidate.  Even if this ticket loses, they’d be foolish not to put her up against the Lightworker (who I suspect by then will be about as popular as herpes) in 2012.

Blue Dog Support of Obama

Bitter talks about how far Blue Dogs should go in their support of Obama.  I agree with her that Schweitzer and Tester are actively trying to pull the wool over the eyes of Montana gun owners in covering up Obama’s awful record on gun rights:

The only really blatant examples of number four that I’ve seen have been in Montana. I don’t know why that is, unless Obama is really making a play for that state. I hope that the voters there will make sure to remember these false claims about Obama being fine with guns when his ATF starts closing down more of their gun dealers and he requests a gun ban on his desk after the first shooting with national attention. When the Blue Dogs start actively lying to their constituents over something as well documented as Obama’s anti-gun record of public statements and policy ideas, it’s time for them to go. They are no longer working to serve the voters who put them there.

That’s pretty much the skinny of it.  I hope NRA will think about this when it comes to endorsement time.

Progressive Misogyny

They don’t call them the nutroots for nothing.  The lefty blogosphere has come absolutely unhinged since Sarah Palin was selected as the Vice Presidential pick.  Even other Democrats are noticing it:

A woman enters the presidential race and suddenly the progressive mission is to shame and mortify Sarah Palin, her children, her husband, and every woman who has ever found herself in a similar situation. And then no one will ever vote for Sarah Palin again because she’s a slut!?!?

I agree, it’s pretty atrocious.  And now the focus is shifting to Bristol Palin, and her pregnancy.  Rightwingprof has a lot more.  I also like this comment at TGW:

It really does get better. The “evidence” being trotted out for the pregnancy coverup is a family photo in which teenage Bristol is less than anorexically thin. “She’s got a pouch! Look at the hooters on that girl!” they scream.

Fellas? I’ve been pregnant and that’s not a pregnancy belly. It’s a normal female body. It’s obviously been a while since those internet-porn wankers have seen one.

Yep.

McCain is Many Things

But I wouldn’t go so far as to classify him as anti-gun.  Here’s John McCain’s two major sins when it comes to gun rights:

  • He supports regulating private sales.
  • He was a lead sponsor of the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act which makes it more difficult for second amendment activists, or any other advocacy group, to defeat incumbent politicians.

That’s basically it.  He was voting against assault weapons bans when it wasn’t popular to do so.  He’s bringing young, pro-gun reformers like Jindal, Palin and Pawlenty onto the national stage, which will enable them to be future leaders in Republican politics.  Would you listen to guy that says something like this:

And I believe Gun Owners of America. I believe Larry Pratt. He has never lied to me. He has never told me one thing, done another and then changed his mind. John McCain has – often. And he does it on all the important issues of the day – from immigration to tax cuts to abortion.

Well, you just ruined any credibility you might have had.  GOA does exaggerate and mislead.  It’s been docuemnted here more than a few times.  Our choice this election is not a panacea, but McCain is no better or worse than other Presidents gun owners have gotten behind.  They were all imperfect, and we managed to make progress while each of them have been in office.  That progress could likely come to a screeching halt, even reverse itself, if Obama is allowed to occupy the White House with an overwhelmingly Democratic congress run by the likes of Nancy Pelosi.  That’s the reality we’re facing if gun owners follow Farah’s advice.  If gun owners want better representation at the national level, sitting this one out isn’t how to get it.  Let’s keep Obama out of the White House, and then hopefully we’ll get a chance to see some of this new blood run for national office.

What Can I Say …

… I’m a sucker for hot Alaska governors who shoot AR-15s.  I just donated 100 bucks to McCain/Palin ’08.  Regardless of how I feel about McCain himself, he’s elevated some very good folks to the national stage, and put them in positions where they’ll be leaders in the Republican Party.  Even if his campaign is destained to crash and burn, this is a great legacy to leave us for the future.

If you’re thinking about donating, now is the time.  McCain took the public financing route, so this weekend is the last his campaign can take donations.  After this, you can only donate through the RNC.

Strategery vs. Tactics

I’ve been worried that the McCain camp doesn’t seem to have their ground game in too good order, especially here in Pennsylvania, but I have to say that their strategic outlook seems to be pretty good.  The media is already starting to attack Sarah Palin as inexperienced.  But every article that brings this issue up is also highlighting Obama’s lack of experience as well.  The difference is, she’s on the bottom of the GOP ticket, and Obama is on the top of the Dem’s.  It’s probably not too smart for the Obama camp to even bring this issue up, but they are doing it.  The selection of Palin to the McCain ticket has put him in a win-win situation.  They can’t not criticize the choice, but on the only issue they can hit her on, also indirectly hurts Obama.

Will NRA Endorse McCain?

It’s been something I’ve been wondering, but I think Palin’s addition to the ticket might change things.  I still lean toward the idea that McCain is not worthy of an endorsement, but then I think how much is on the line this election.  McCain is far from perfect, but I think it should be considered in the following light:

  • Gerald Ford never met a “reasonable gun law” he didn’t support, and is responsible for Stevens being on The Court.
  • Ronald Reagan favored the enactment of the Brady Act, but also nominated Kennedy and Scalia to The Court.
  • George H.W. Bush, who was Reagan’s VP before becoming president, issued an executive order to ban so called assault weapons using his powers under the GCA of 1968.  While he put Souter on The Court, he also put Justice Thomas.
  • Bob Dole did not receive an NRA endorsement in 1996 because of his stance on the Clinton gun ban, and lost to Bill Clinton.
  • George W. Bush favored re-enacting the assault weapons ban.  Granted, his VP pick was pretty good, but Dick Cheney is a duck gun kind of guy.  Bush’s Solicitor General worked against us in Heller, but he put Roberts and Alito on The Court.
  • McCain favors regulating private sales, but Palin is pretty solidly pro-gun, and is a hunter and NRA life member.  Unlike a lot of other politicians, he’s not afraid to oppose an assault weapons ban.  He’s picked up a lot of obscure pro-gun candidates and put them front and center on the public stage.

I’m not saying NRA should endorse McCain, but I’m not going to freak out if they do.  In terms of previous Republican presidents, McCain is really no worse, and may even be better.  I have no idea which way NRA is leaning in terms of an endorsement, but I’m willing to accept either course of action.  An endorsement has serious political consequences for how people on the ground may help his campaign.  While I wish McCain would repudiate his stance on private sales, gun owners have been able to make progress with a very imperfect endorsed presidential candidates from the 1980s to now.  I worry that ceding the White House to Barack Obama will cause us to lose everything we’ve worked on for the past decade.
