Philadelphia Tea Party

There’s a “Tea Party” protest in Philadelphia tomorrow at Independence Hall.  I am sending Bitter along as the Snowflakes in Hell intrepid on-the-scene reporter.  I will not be able to attend, unfortunately, due to work.

It might not seem like it, but these tea party protests are actually a very good thing for gun rights, even though they have nothing to do with them.  They are apt to worry the Democrats about the 2010 elections if they are seeing organized protests over economic issues this early into the 111th Congress.  That makes them less likely to take on other contentious issues before the midterms.  Make plans to attend if you have time and can get off work.

Is Philadelphia This Screwed Up?

This seems pretty screwed up if you ask me.  My first question is why is a judge using a police roll call room as an impromptu courtroom?  Shouldn’t a judge have their own courtroom?  Or at least a courtroom shared among several judges?

And if you’re a judge, who has to hold hearings in a police roll call room, isn’t it understandable that the decorum, I don’t know, might more accurately reflect that of a police station rather than a court room, especially one that just lost an officer.

I can understand the desire to create an appearance of impartiality, but when the city apparently has no money for a proper court room, and you have to use a police station, it seems to be you should respect the people who primarily use the room.  It’s not like the person appearing before you won’t understand he’s being arraigned in a police station.

Philadelphia Loses Another Police Officer

Story here.  The suspect is still on life support, and will hopefully help save the taxpayers some money and trouble.  It’s going to get worse in that city, since the Mayor’s response to the budget crisis is to slash the police force.

In my continued tradition of posting the rap sheets of high profile killers in the City of Brother Love, our suspect in this case is Rasheed Scrugs.  His rap sheet can be found here.  As usual, this cop killer has a long history of trouble with the criminal justice system that never were properly prosecuted.

AK-47 SKS Swap on Craigslist Causing a Stir

Curt has an interesting story from Philadelphia about someone proposing an AK-47 SKS swap on Craigslist.  I agree with Curt this is likely someone seeking attention, and quite possibly an anti-gunner looking to raise an issue in the media.  Whoever is proposing it, pretty clearly knows little or nothing of guns, and nearly nothing about their value.  That makes me skeptical it’s a gun enthusiast, and a gang member wouldn’t be using craigslist.

But I have to wonder about the mentality of city officials here, especially given that the paper incorrectly suggests that the transaction requires use of an FFL (true for handguns in Pennsylvania, but not for long guns).  One has to wonder if people can legally buy and transfer guns, even if an FFL is required, what’s the outrage about trading a gun for rims?  Or does such a transaction make allusions to certain demographics that people don’t want buying guns?

Tax Dollars at Work

Looks like SEPTA designed a pass for Philadelphia’s Beer Week that featured a nice skyline.  The only problem?  The skyline was New York City.  I’ll remember that as I’m driving to work on the turnpike every day with my tolls paying for this crap.  I guess if you get drunk enough at beer week, the skyline might start to look like Philly’s.

Rifle Standoff in Philadelphia

Apparently the Philadelphia Police were in a standoff with an armed suspect earlier today:

So, how did you folks spend your day? We spent it trying to coax a gun-toting piece of garbage out of his car. You know, because we couldn’t have him off himself with his Chinese assault rifle, right? That would have made our lives much easier.

At least he didn’t start firing at anyone else, and surrendered peacefully.  Funny thing is, the Chinese variants of the AK have been banned for a number of years from further importation.  Since 1989, if I recall, yet you often hear about them showing up on the streets.  Which is odd, because they aren’t that common on the range.  I have to wonder if a large shipment of them got diverted to the black market some time ago, and they’ve been circulating on the streets since.

Philadelphia Police Abandoning Europellet

Looks like the Philadelphia Police are getting rid of the 9mm Glocks and going with .40 or .45 caliber Glocks.  The Pennsylvania State Police recently adopted the .45GAP line of Glocks.  Ramsey must be reading my blog :)

What Philadelphia is Up To in Regards to LTCs

A few years ago the state increased the license fee for a license to carry by six dollars.  Philadelphia kept charging the old rate of 19 dollars.  Now the city is sending out the following letter:

.

Demanding that people pay the back fees owed, or they will be turned over to collections and have their LTC revoked.  Unfortunately for Philadelphia, there’s no provision in state law that allows a License to Carry to be revoked because the issuing agency charged the incorrect fee.
