Tasteless Article of the Day

Goes to Karen Araiza of NBC Philadelphia:

Her gun-toting problems started about a year ago when Meleanie picked an ominous day – September 11, 2008 – to show up at her little girl’s soccer game with the loaded gun holstered to her hip, very visible and very upsetting to other parents.

Gun toting problems? Speaking of it like it’s the same as heavy drinking? But that’s just bias, not tastelessness.  This is where it gets tasteless:

Back in December, Hain was runner-up for The Patriot-News “Person of the Year”. Despite all the controversy, she said her views on the right to bear arms hadn’t changed.

“I am happy being a gun owner.”

Autopsies were being performed Thursday. The Hain children were with relatives.

You can’t tell me those two sentences weren’t meant to play off each other. Congratulations Ms. Araiza, you officially suck.

Keep Up the Pressure

The Pocono Record has run another glowing op-ed on Mayor Baughman of Stroudsburg, praising his membership in Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Tunnel vision gun owners, spurred by the powerful National Rifle Association, have been sending hostile messages to Baughman urging him to resign from MAIG. The NRA and groups like it hold tremendous sway over gun owners and elected officials.

Hear that? You have tunnel vision. You’re too stupid to think for yourself, according to The Record. They, of course, can see the big picture. But they wouldn’t be running this op-ed, once again today, if Baughman wasn’t continuing to be pressured by his constituents. Hopefully we can keep it up and get him to leave MAIG.

Worst Editorial on McDonald So Far

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which still does not explicitly call for the Supreme Court to deny incorporation, though I get the impression the editorial board for the Gazette are lightweights when it comes to constitutional laws. They are definitely unhappy about the current state of affairs with regards to gun control.

WaPo Speaking Like It’s a Done Deal

Even the Washington Post is conceding the likelihood of the Chicago handgun ban defeated.

Given how the Constitution has evolved, lawyers from both the left and right of the political spectrum will present strong arguments that the Second Amendment applies to state and local government, just as the First Amendment does. It would seem at least incongruous — and may ultimately be legally indefensible — for residents of the District to enjoy constitutional rights that are withheld from people in Chicago or other parts of the country.

In fact, I’ve had a hard time finding newspaper op-eds that call for the Supreme Court to refuse to incorporate the Second Amendment.  Two Chicago Tribune columnists, here, and here, both think the result is going to be a victory for the Second Amendment, and don’t call for the Supreme Court to rule the other way.

The media is surrendering on this issue. The Brady Campaign are surrendering on this issue, at least publicly. I think we will have incorporation, and then we will begin to define the boundaries of the Second Amendment. That’s where the real fight is, but in no future case will the stakes be as high as they were with Heller, and now McDonald.

Misleading Media Reports

The media is issuing reports that would seem to indicate that Bulls Eye Shooter Supply is losing its FFL.  Bulls Eye was the shop where John Allen Mohammad shoplifted his rifle from before going on a sniping rampage with it on the DC Beltway.

According to Dave Workman, that’s not the truth, or at least not the whole truth. The FFL of the previous owner of Bulls Eye Shooter Supply has been revoked, and upheld. The business was sold to a new owner, who has cleaned up its act, and has an FFL issued to him.  The new owners still have a valid FFL and are in business.

More evidence the media needs to spend more time trying to understand how the federal licensing system works, so they don’t inadvertently punish or smear someone who’s not even remotely culpable in the original malfeasance.

Criminal Trespass = Civil Disobedience?

The Philadelphia Daily News couldn’t be more thrilled:

The civil disobedience followed weeks of discussions with Colosimo’s in which activists urging the store to accept a voluntary 10-point code of conduct that was created by a national coalition of mayors, including Mayor Nutter. The code was aimed at preventing gun traffickers from hiding their identities by using intermediaries — the kind of purchases Colosimo now is charged with allowing. (Demonstrators were acquitted of misdemeanor charges in May.)

They are speaking of this civil disobedience. Congratulations, Heeding God’s Call, you convinced the feds to take him down. Easy target. He was an old man who doesn’t want to fight anymore. But you can bet they will try this with other Philadelphia gun shops, in an attempt to get them closed down too. Any gun shop near a major city that does any volume of business is going to end up selling some guns that are used in crimes. That’s a given. Any gun shop that does any volume of business is going to have some record keeping anomalies. They know this. They will try again.

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

From an AP story on the shooting of four SWAT officers:

A gunman opened fire early Thursday on a SWAT team that burst into a home during a drug and gun raid, wounding four officers while spraying bullets from atop a staircase, authorities said. One officer was critically wounded.

Contrasted with:

He was charged with four counts of attempted murder, as well illegal weapons possession and receiving stolen property. The .357 Magnum used to shoot the officers was reported stolen from South Carolina, Ford said.

Now, I suppose it’s possible they got .357 Magnum confused with .357 SIG, but one wonders how a six shot revolver sprays bullets. I think getting it right is important here, because by reporting it incorrectly, the AP fails to convey just how dangerous this individual was. The story makes it seem like he was just shooting wildly and got lucky.

He shot four police officers, in full body armor, with guns drawn and ready, at night, with a six shot revolver.  He seriously wounded one with a head shot, wounded another in the foot, and landed two chest shots which were stopped by the officers’ body armor. That, folks, is a dangerous individual who has some serious gunfighting skills. Given the kind of crap he was involved in, the officers involved deserve a lot of praise for getting this guy off the streets. He didn’t just land lucky shots spraying wildly. If this guy had confronted non-SWAT officers, he probably would have killed somebody.  The most seriously wounded officer, the one shot in the head, seems to be doing fine, and is expected to recover, though he may lose an eye due to the path of the bullet.

More on the Media Spectacle of MAIG

SayUncle airs concerns over the lack of media coverage on mayors who are departing Bloomberg’s anti-gun group. Since I wanted to do a tally for someone else looking for a biased slant, here’s a tally at where we stand on headlines:

*Mixed is defined even as covering mayors who are still in the group, but written by pro-gun people asking them to leave, coverage of multiple mayors who have taken different courses of action, and a really weird one out of NH that wasn’t even relevant.

Overwhelmingly, the mixed stories are by gun owners writing letters to the editor in order to get coverage that their local paper seemingly won’t cover.

You would never know by this breakdown in headlines that Bloomberg was touting more than 450 mayors a few weeks ago, and now he’s losing them so quickly that he removed the counter from his website and put up a plea for more members. In the Pennsylvania coverage, no one has mentioned that the state coalition is down by more than 15% in just two weeks.

Officer.com Looks at Mexican Gun Canard

And gets a lot of facts wrong:

An M2 Browning model .50-caliber machine gun mounted on a white Ford F-150, a homemade turret welded to the frame. A .30-caliber rifle, a Barret .50-caliber rifle on a bipod, a modified AR-15, a 30-30 rifle, parts for a 37mm grenade launcher and a couple of AK-47s, along with about 9,000 rounds and a pound and a half of cocaine.

Because we all know you can buy grenades, grenade launchers, 50 caliber machine guns, and half a kilo a cocaine at any gun show in the US right?  But it gets better:

With its liberal gun laws, Arizona is at the heart of the storm. Unlike most states, the popular semiautomatic rifles, AK-47s, AR-15s, are easily purchased with little more than a driver’s license and some forms. The large caliber rifles, like those Beltrán stored, are also for sale.

Unlike most states? Only about six states have any restrictions on semi-automatic variants of these rifles, and five of them are in the Northeast.  Most states treat them like ordinary guns because they are ordinary guns.  And since when can you just walk into a gun store anywhere in the US and just buy a Browning M2 heavy machine gun?

But nobody can explain how a .50-caliber rifle can be driven down to the Mexico border and then crossed over.

That’s easy.  It’s not happening.  They are being stolen from the Mexican military, or purchased from the military and government through corrupt channels.  I know it’s hard to believe there’s corruption in Mexico, but there is.

Then there are the grenades. April 2008: Rafael Alcantar, a Mexican man, is sentenced in federal court, charged with trying to buy a 40mm grenade launcher, three fragmentation grenades and 26 full-auto machine guns from undercover agents in Tucson.

All of which are perfectly legal in the US, you know.  I can go down to Wal-Mart right now and pick up all the fragmentation grenades I can carry!   Look, no one denies that there are guns being trafficked from the United States into Mexico, just as I’m sure there are guns being trafficked from Mexico into the United States, and we know drugs are moving across borders freely.  But why do all of these stories conflate reality by trying to make it look like the United States is some third world arms bazar where you pick up your anti-tank missiles at the local flea market?  No doubt because the purpose of these articles is something else entirely.  Otherwise they never would mention the expired federal assault weapons ban, which didn’t make either AR-15s or semi-automatic variants of the AK-47 illegal, or unobtainable.
